A UK poll has people arguing over whether a partner flirting with a video game character counts as cheating, and GTA 6 is the reason the question came back. The game launches on November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Rockstar Games’ official GTA 6 page, and its optional Jason and Lucia romance gave the question a fresh excuse to come back.

We sort things the usual way: official is what Rockstar said, reported is what outlets and a pollster found, and opinion is anyone’s view, ours included. Sources are named with dates. One limit up front: we could not find YouGov’s own publication, so every number below comes from news coverage of it.

About 6% of Britons Called It Cheating, Reportedly

In a YouGov survey of more than 4,000 British adults, about 6% said a partner romancing a game character would count as cheating, and another 19% said it would not, but they still would not be okay with it. That is how the BBC reported it on October 19. Khel Now and iXBT carried the same figures that day, and egamers.io followed on October 20.

These are British numbers, reportedly gathered in September, so they say nothing about gamers elsewhere. Women were more likely than men to object, according to the BBC, and GameNGuide (October 19) adds that 54% would neither call it cheating nor mind. Outlets paraphrase the question differently and none quotes it, so we will not either. Treat every percentage as relayed, not checked.

Rockstar Says the Romance Is Optional

Reportedly, the clearest statement we found comes from Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, in an IGN interview. Gfinity Esports reported on August 27 that Nelson said the romance is up to the player and that nobody is penalized for skipping what he called “the sappy stuff.” Jason and Lucia are the two lead characters, so this is a bond between protagonists.

That is all we can call official: optional, with no penalty for ignoring it. Reportedly, as relayed by tbreak on September 1 from IGN, Rockstar was still weighing how physical intimacy should work and had not confirmed it. We found nothing official on how the story treats the relationship, and we will not guess about it either.

Optional is the word doing the heavy lifting in this argument.

The Argument Started on TikTok Before the Poll

Reportedly, it began right after the August 27 extended look. Tbreak (September 1), relaying IGN, said several TikTok users objected to partners playing romance scenes, and some called it cheating. One creator warned viewers not to let a boyfriend, fiancé or husband play. Others replied that it is “a video game and not a second household.”

Now for opinion, which is ours and not anyone’s official line: the funny part is a loud online fight over a quiet 6%. Still, 19% is not nothing, and it hints that the real split is between “is it cheating” and “would I be comfortable.” Those are different arguments, and a poll with two separate boxes just proved it.

So Is It Cheating? Your Call, Not Ours

Nothing official answers that, and a poll cannot settle it either. Rockstar’s part is the design: the romance is optional, and skipping it carries no penalty. Where the line sits belongs to each couple, and we are not handing out verdicts. For more on the pair at the center of it, read what Jason and Lucia reportedly want.

Until November 19, the safest move is also the cheapest: mention it over dinner, laughing allowed. Still counting days? Here is how fans are getting through the last month of waiting. This is a debate, not a ruling.

Where is your line: harmless pixels, mildly awkward or a full cheating offense?
