The GTA 6 Launch Week Is Already Messing With Work

Picture yourself typing a time-off request for November 19, finger hovering over send, unsure how to word it. Plenty of players are about to be in that exact spot. GTA 6 arrives on Thursday, November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and with less than a month to go, requests for the day are already reaching managers. Our take: a midweek launch was always going to rattle office calendars.

“Sick” is the running joke, but the smarter play is asking openly and well ahead of time. Behind the buzz sit a CEO’s quip, a warning from Australia’s workplace regulator, data from HR software firms and a much-repeated $1 billion estimate. Our take: the conversation is funnier than the numbers, and the numbers are shakier than the headlines suggest.

The GTA 6 “Sick Day” Joke Everyone Has Heard

The “sick day” line began as a joke by Take-Two’s own CEO, and no company policy sits behind it. Strauss Zelnick spoke at the iicon conference in Las Vegas on April 28, 2026, and said “a lot of people will be calling in sick on November 19,” according to NME on April 29. NME credits IGN with the first report of the remark. It was a quip. Nothing more.

Fans picked up Zelnick’s line and ran, and it now circulates under the name “GTA flu,” a half-serious launch ritual that sits beside the usual traditions of any big release. It joins another running gag of the launch season, and it works for the same reason most good internet jokes do: plenty of people see themselves in it. Bosses, naturally, may be less amused.

A CEO’s joke is still a joke, and your schedule still belongs to your employer.

Australia’s Workplace Regulator Weighed In

There is no general right to take time off just to play a video game, and Australia’s workplace regulator said as much. The Fair Work Ombudsman published an Instagram carousel about GTA 6 in early October 2026, as reported by Dexerto and VGC on October 8. An agency that handles pay and leave rarely addresses a game release, which is why the post spread. The tone was light. The subject was serious.

The Fair Work Ombudsman’s carousel imagines GTA 6 coming out “tomorrow” and then walks through the kinds of protected leave that do exist, such as parental leave, carer’s leave and community service leave. Dexerto reported the gag that ties it together: a video game is not a child. The list makes a clear point about which absences the law protects and which ones it leaves to the employer.

The practical message from the Fair Work Ombudsman is simple. No general entitlement to unpaid leave exists for this purpose, so the employer decides, and people should ask well ahead. The post is a light-hearted warning that offers no tips for skipping work. Its rules apply to Australia, so readers in the United States should check their own employer’s policies and state laws.

Who Is Actually Asking for the GTA 6 Day Off?

So far the evidence consists mostly of surveys and anecdotes, and firm headcounts are missing. BambooHR, according to the Wall Street Journal as relayed by Money.com, saw requests for November 19 running between 9% and 17% above those for a typical third Thursday in November. A BambooHR spokesperson cautioned that the bump could reflect a wider trend of taking that day off as well as the game. Useful signal, then, but no proof.

Deputy, a shift-scheduling platform, spoke to HRD Asia, and its CTO Ciaran Hale said that policing sick leave damages trust and does not fix an empty shop floor. Deputy recommends treating November 18 to 20 as a risk window and offering staff some flexibility. The same HRD Asia report noted that absenteeism around the Overwatch 2 launch nearly doubled.

Two scenes have made the rounds as well. Gfinity reported that Burger Motorsports, a California parts maker, announced in a joking tone that it will close on November 19; we could not confirm when the post went up. IBTimes UK reported that a US Army battalion at Fort Stewart reportedly offered a four-day pass to soldiers who re-enlisted, although versions of that story conflict.

GameSquare, in a press release dated October 20, 2026, surveyed 1,000 US employees who play games, with a 3% margin of error. It found that 10% plan to miss work, 30% are considering taking the day off and 42% expect to be less productive. Of the 30% who are considering time off, 36% would say they are sick. The survey is promotional and names no polling institute, so treat it as a snapshot of mood.

Surveys capture what workers say they will do, and only November 19 shows what they did.

The “$1 Billion” Estimate: Read the Fine Print

No one we found has shown the math behind the $1 billion figure. The estimate of roughly $1 billion in lost output and about 1.5 million absences, attributed to the economist José García Montalvo, has been widely repeated, including by GamesRadar and other outlets. It makes a tidy headline, and the caveats rarely keep pace. Round numbers get quoted first and questioned later.

According to MercoPress and IBTimes UK, the estimate does not come from a published study. We could not find a published study or the calculation behind it either. For that reason we add no arithmetic of our own and propose no replacement number, because an invented figure would only join the unsourced claims already circulating.

MercoPress offered a comparison for perspective: Challenger, Gray & Christmas estimated more than $4 billion in lost productivity on the Monday after the Super Bowl. The two events differ in method and occasion, so we treat the comparison as context. It shows that absence estimates for big events are a familiar genre. The conversation they start matters more than any single figure.

A number everyone repeats still deserves someone checking it.

A GTA 6 Launch Week Plan That Won’t Cost You Your Job

Ask early, and ask openly. That is what Australia’s workplace regulator advised, and it matches what HR firms say helps teams organize. Check how your company handles time-off requests, then ask for the day, or for the whole November 18 to 20 stretch, and offer to swap shifts if coverage is a worry. A manager who hears weeks ahead has options. One who hears the night before has a problem.

GTA 6 launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026. Pre-loading is reported to begin on November 12, 2026, according to Gamingbible, which cites Rockstar. Push Square and VGC reported in June 2026 that the physical edition is a box with a code and no disc. Store listings (PlayStation Store, Xbox) show midnight local time, but Rockstar has not publicly confirmed an unlock time.

Mind the calendar too. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, one week after launch, and holiday requests can pile up around it, so raising the topic now makes life easier for whoever approves them. This community has plenty of practice at patience, as the story of how the fanbase handled the wait shows. A five-minute chat with your manager is the cheapest part of the whole plan.

The best day-off plan is the one your manager hears about from you first.

Launch week will pass, and most of us will remember the game far longer than the paperwork. A calm, honest request protects your job and your goodwill alike, and it leaves the sick-day joke where it belongs, in the group chat. Tell us in the comments how your manager reacted, whether it was a cheerful yes, a polite no or a negotiated half day. We read every one.

What is your plan for the week of November 16?
