There’s a meme that reportedly passed 700,000 views, built around the line “me and the boys when GTA 6 finally comes out,” paired with a photo of a group of guys who look decades older and grayer than they should. No caption needed. Everyone in the replies got it instantly, because everyone in the replies has been waiting the same amount of time.

That’s the mood right now, almost three years after Rockstar dropped the first trailer in December 2023 and told the world a game was actually coming. Since then, Rockstar has officially pushed the release date back twice, each delay moving the finish line further out while the fanbase kept refreshing the same handful of news sites for an update.

You’d expect that kind of pattern to produce nothing but anger. Instead, it produced one of the most oddly affectionate fandoms on the internet right now. I’ve watched this community live through every stage of that wait in real time, and what follows traces more than the timeline of delays: how a fanbase with every reason to be furious ended up laughing.

Two Delays, Almost Three Years of Waiting

Rockstar has delayed GTA 6 twice: first from its 2025 target to May 26, 2026 (announced May 2, 2025), then to November 19, 2026 (announced November 6, 2025). The story starts with the December 2023 trailer, which came with a target window sometime in 2025. For a while that felt reasonable, until reality set in the way it does with big open-world games, and Rockstar officially made the first delay real.

That was delay number one, and it hit a fanbase that had spent over a year building expectations around an earlier date. It wasn’t the last. Fans had barely adjusted their calendars when, on November 6, 2025, Rockstar announced a second official delay, moving the date again to November 19, 2026, the one still standing today.

Both times, the company gave essentially the same reason: it needed more time to hit the quality bar it had set for itself. Coming from most studios, that line would sound like a dodge. Coming from the team behind the last few Grand Theft Auto games, it reads like a promise being taken seriously, even if keeping it means waiting even longer to see whether it holds up.

From Rage to Running Joke

Frustration gave way to humor because the fanbase found something better to do with the waiting than stay angry. I remember the first delay hitting like a punch: timelines full of genuine frustration, long threads counting the months lost, and more than a few posts declaring this was the moment they were “done” caring. People had planned around that May 2026 date, and watching it evaporate felt like a real letdown.

What changed wasn’t the delays themselves. It was what the fanbase started doing with the waiting in between. GTA 6 fans had already built an entire meme format for measuring time against the game’s absence, the “We Got X Before GTA 6” joke, which I’ve written about in more detail here. Every delay handed that format fresh material, and making the joke simply became easier than staying furious.

Somewhere between the second delay and the hundredth meme, frustration quietly turned into a running bit.

The Meme Group Therapy Nobody Asked For

The “me and the boys” meme I mentioned earlier is basically the mascot of this whole era of waiting. It shows up remixed with different photos, different captions, and the same punchline every time: we have aged, physically and emotionally, waiting for one video game. The joke works because so many people recognize themselves in it immediately.

In July, Thunder Dungeon gave a name to something I’d been feeling, describing the flood of GTA 6 memes as something close to a support group for anyone who has waited far too long for anything. That framing stuck with me, because it matches scrolling through this content: less mocking the game, more a room full of people nodding at each other because they all get the joke without explanation.

Rockstar Says It’s Almost Over (For Real This Time)

With two delays already behind them, Rockstar and Take-Two have been unusually direct about the date holding this time. Press reports say Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has publicly reaffirmed confidence in the November 19, 2026 date. According to those reports, the company also moved quickly to shut down a rumor of a third official delay, pushing everything to May 2027, traced back to a parody account.

Then, on August 27, 2026, Rockstar gave fans something more concrete than a reaffirmed date: an “Extended Look” that premiered on Netflix before it reached the general public. For a fanbase running almost entirely on trailers and delay announcements, an early, exclusive preview hit hard and reignited a fresh wave of memes. The surest way to get this community joking again turns out to be giving it something to look at.

Why Nobody’s Mad Anymore

Because waiting became something fans do together, in the replies, instead of something each of them endures alone. Looking back at almost three years of this, the anger faded and a group of people stuck counting down anyway decided to turn it into a bit everyone is in on. Between the first delay and the second, a complaint became a ritual, and rituals are hard to stay mad at.

Two delays in, the loudest reaction is a punchline everyone already knows by heart.

The next delay news, should it ever come, will probably get you laughing before it gets you mad. The joke has also already walked into the office, where launch-day time-off requests are the new punchline. Scroll through any thread and you can watch a fanbase that learned to enjoy the countdown instead of fighting it, one reply at a time. Tell us in the comments when you stopped being mad.

Are you still counting down the days, or did you make peace with the wait a long time ago?
