If GTA 6 is on a teenager’s holiday list, or if you are the teenager trying to make that list look reasonable, the first question is the same: what does the rating actually say? Rockstar Games’ official GTA 6 page sets the release for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so the gift decision is a few weeks away. A Series S owner can also check how the smaller console is expected to cope.

This guide sticks to what rating boards and the console makers have published. We separate official records, outlet reports and our own reading, and every source is named with its date. A rating is a label for adults, not a review, so we will also say what it cannot tell you.

The US Rating Is M for Mature 17+, With Seven Descriptors

Officially, the ESRB lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series as M for Mature 17+, and we checked that listing on October 23. The seven content descriptors are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Dexerto reported the same list on October 6. The ESRB describes M as suggested for ages 17 and up.

The listing also carries In-Game Purchases. The ESRB explains that this label covers optional paid extras such as in-game currency and cosmetics, and that it does not affect the rating. In plain words, the 17+ comes from the content, while the purchases label is a separate heads-up for your wallet. The ESRB adds that descriptors flag what contributed to a rating and are not a complete list.

Other Countries Land in the Same Adult Territory

Reportedly, PEGI rates the game 18 in Europe and the UK, according to GTABoom on October 17. We did not find the title in PEGI’s own public search on October 23, so treat that as reported. Australia’s board lists R18+ and New Zealand R18, also per GTABoom, with sex scenes named in both. Games.gg noted on October 2 that store listings there already used that wording.

Brazil is reported at 18+, with sexual content, drugs, improper language and violence as the main descriptors. Portal Viciados said on October 9 that the Ministry of Justice classification had been published in the official gazette. We could not open the Ministry’s own record, so the Brazilian rating is not confirmed by us. Across every board we found, the direction is the same: adults only.

A rating is a label on the box, not a trailer for the game.

What a Rating Cannot Tell You

A rating tells you which kinds of content exist, not which scenes, missions or features you will meet. GTABoom made the same point on October 17: descriptors confirm categories, not specific moments from the leaks. That is our reading too, and it cuts both ways. A viral clip is neither proven nor disproven by an M label, so nobody should cite the rating as evidence for a rumored mechanic.

The label also cannot tell you what a particular teenager can handle. Rockstar has not published a detailed content guide that we found, so the ESRB listing, the descriptors and the official trailers are the only first-hand material available. If you want to know what you would be buying, watch Rockstar’s own trailers together before launch and judge the tone with your own eyes.

The M label tells you the neighborhood, not the street.

Before It Goes Under the Tree: Controls, Spending and a Conversation

Both console makers document tools for this. Sony’s PS5 support page describes an “Age level for games and apps” setting and a monthly spending limit that starts at 0 until a family manager raises it. Microsoft’s Xbox family page says parents can filter or allow games based on a child’s age and approve purchases through “Ask a Parent.” Menus change, so follow the makers’ own pages for the steps.

Check that the level you choose blocks M-rated titles before launch day, and decide whether in-game purchases are allowed at all. Then do the dull part and ask the teenager what they have heard about the game. Scammers love a countdown, so buy only from official stores, as we covered in how fans are getting through the last month. Teens, showing a parent the ESRB page yourself beats “everyone has it.”

What is the first thing you would ask before saying yes to this game?
