If your console is not the newest one on the shelf, the last two big GTA 6 showpieces probably left you with a quiet question: what was that footage running on? Rockstar’s official page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for November 19, 2026, and both the Netflix Extended Look (August 27) and the Launch Trailer (October 15) were captured on a PS5, according to the sources below.

We sort things the usual way: official (what Rockstar, Netflix or the page itself says), reported (what outlets say) and interpretation (our reading, flagged as such). One spoiler first: nobody we found said “base” PS5 officially, and a trailer is not a benchmark. Your console can relax a little, but only a little.

Rockstar and Netflix Said PS5, Not “Base PS5”

Officially, the Launch Trailer’s video description reads, as quoted by Well Played on October 15: “This trailer was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5.” For the Extended Look, Netflix’s Tudum page says it was “captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5,” according to TechRadar and GTABoom on August 27. Neither quote names a specific model of the console.

Reportedly, the word “base” comes from outlets. TechRadar’s August 27 headline said the Extended Look was captured on the base PS5, but that is the writer’s wording, not Netflix’s. On October 15, HotHardware wrote that it assumed the trailer represents a base PS5. Our reading: plausible, since nobody mentions a Pro, but a missing name is not a confirmation.

Saying “PS5” is not the same as saying “base PS5,” and that gap is where most of the confusion lives.

A Capture Shows the Look, Not the Frame Rate

Footage captured in-game tells you what the game can look like on that console, and not much more. In the sources we read, neither Rockstar nor Netflix gave a resolution or a frame rate, and Well Played noted that the trailer’s description does not specify which console model was used. We found no performance numbers from Rockstar for any console, which is also why we cannot promise anything about yours.

In our view, any trailer is edited to show a studio’s best moments, and the soundtrack helps the persuasion: God Is a Geek reported in October that Justice’s “Flower in a Hurricane,” with Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, debuted in it. Lovely song, zero frames per second. The potato jokes are safe for now.

“Plays Best On PS5” Is a Label, Not a Benchmark

Officially, when we loaded Rockstar’s GTA 6 page on October 23, it showed a “Plays Best On” line with a PlayStation 5 badge, beside the November 19, 2026 date and both platform names. A footnote on the page points to PlayStation’s own GTA VI features page. Push Square reported in July that the banner can depend on how you reach the page, so what you see may vary.

Reportedly, TheGamer wrote on June 24 that PlayStation framed the claim around features of its console. Our reading is that this is a partnership label, not a measurement, and it says nothing about Series S or PS5 Pro, so we make no promise about either. For Xbox, read our Series S piece, which separates official from rumor and warns that footage from one console says nothing about another.

A trailer shows what the game can look like; only Rockstar can say how it runs.

What to Do Until Rockstar Shares Numbers

Hold off on big purchases justified by a single trailer. If a PS5 is already at home, the footage is a reassuring sign of how the game can look there, and the date is still November 19. If you play elsewhere, the honest advice has not changed: wait for Rockstar’s own specs and for reviews. Nothing we found supports a promise in either direction.

Also be careful with anything claiming to be a “performance test” or leaked gameplay download. Malwarebytes flagged fake GTA 6 sites spreading malware in August, so stick to Rockstar’s own pages and established outlets. Scammers love an anxious fan with a countdown and a tight budget, and they do not need a trailer to find you.

Which console are you quietly counting on for November 19?
